Toronto Fire Fighters Annual Toy Drive at Shops at Don Mills Nov 29

 

Come out and have a great night with the family at the Shops at Don Mills! The fun begins Thursday, November 29, 2012 starting at 5:00 pm.

Please bring a new unwrapped toy to donate to help make a wish come true for an underprivileged child this Christmas.  With your donation of a toy worth $10 or more you will receive a free hamburger from South St. Burger, a drink from Aroma Espresso Bar and a cookie from The Bier Markt. You can also complete a passport by visiting some of our stores and you can be entered into a draw for a Cadillac Fairview shop! card valued at $500 to help with your Holiday Shopping!!!

This will also be the night they light their Holiday Trees in the Town Square with Santa and his Reindeer making a visit!  See the trees begin to sparkle between 5:30 PM and 5:45 PM as they flip the switch to get the Holiday Season underway.

Mistletoe Magic Craft Show & Sale Nov 29

Norman Ingram Public School (50 Duncairn Rd.) will once again be hosting their ‘Mistletoe Magic Craft Show and Sale’ on Thursday November 29, 2012 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

This boutique style craft sale is Don Mills’ own “One of a Kind” show with something for everyone and every budget.  Featuring more than 30 local artisans, it is the perfect venue to find that unique gift – art, clothing and accessories, handbags, holiday decorations, home decor, jewellery, kids’ products, specialty foods, and much more - stock up on your holiday baking while mingling with friends and neighbours!

The night is organized by the Norman Ingram School Council and is a community spirit and fundraising event.  Admission is only $2 for adults and kids are free.  Seize the opportunity to support local artisans while picking up quality handmade goods.  There is plenty of free parking so please join us and bring a friend!

Yorkminstrels Show Choir Nov 17

Music On The Donway 2012-2013 in its eleventh season has excellent acoustics in the Donway Covenant United Church.  We are featuring the Yorkminstrels Show Choir on November 17, 2012. Tickets are $20 each and students with ID and children 12 years and under are $12, available through the church office at 416-444-8444 or at the door the night of the concert. Due to the outstanding quality of the first concert with the Yorkminstrels Show Choir and the likelihood of having a full house attendance we encourage you to buy your tickets soon.

Millar Team Pumpkin Event & Food Drive Oct 19

The headlines tell a story of the crisis unfolding before our very eyes. Children, some no more than infants, are suffering the effects of hunger as you read this letter. This year, a group of children in our community are rallying to answer the call of social justice. This year, hunger’s enemy will be the youngest, the children of our community, and they need our help.

On Thursday October 4, and Friday October 5 Three Valleys Public School will accept food donations for community residents. The “Double Up to Fight Hunger” campaign, created by students, parents and teachers represents what a community can do when it combines resources to tackle an urgent problem. This group of elementary students discovered, through the board’s social justice/character education curriculum that a staggering number of children their age go to bed hungry every night. Through classroom discussions, they soon realized that hunger exists in every community, including their own. These young people and their teachers brainstormed ideas to address the problem and realized that if they all gave double the effort to reach people, convinced double their friends and family members to donate, and persuaded all the people they knew to reach double their friends and families, they could make a difference and help fight hunger. Thus was born the “Double Up to Fight Hunger” concept.

Soon after the idea was conceived, Magic Bus Company in Toronto volunteered to have a double decker bus transport the donations from the school to the food bank. The students did some quick calculations and realized that a bus of that size could hold a ton of food. Further investigation revealed that a ton of food could feed 1000 children.

As the idea evolved, more teachers at Three Valleys got “on board.”  When the school council heard about the project they joined the kids. The press has heard about this unique project and its anticipated they will be on hand to cover the day’s events. Now, as you read this, children at Three Valleys are exchanging Facebook messages with family members urging them to contribute to the food bank, creating email blasts to inform their friends of the project, and designing web pages with a link to the school website that promote the endeavour. As this event draws near, the community is in high gear, applying a herculean effort to address this serious problem.

The Mt Pleasant Village Harvest Fair is here! They will have a pumpkin-carving contest, apple pie bake-off, music, a meet-and-greet with a Paralympic athlete (noon-2 pm) and more! Ontario Distilled: Art Show Sept 27

Ontario Distilled: Art Show (Taylor Statten Camping Bursary) Come out and enjoy in an evening of Canadian art and entertainment that will help give children a chance to experience Ontario's northland by sending them to camp! I am a big supporter of the outdoors and believe every child should have the right to experience The Great Canadian Outdoors. The CNE is open!

Let's go to the Ex oh baby..let's go to the Ex! It's that time of year again. The Canadian National Exhibition (The Ex), can be expensive for a family day of fun so I always suggest packing a lunch to bring with you and take the TTC if you can! They will be featuring bandshell concerts,  midway, rides, a talent competition and much more! It runs from Aug 17 to Sep 3. $16, child/seniors $12, under 4 free (rides extra).

Roundhouse Craft Beer Festival!

This summer seems to be for eating and drinking! The Roundhouse Craft Beer Festival  will feature ales, lagers, and seasonal and experimental beers from local producers, plus gourmet food trucks! $15, advance tickets are $10 (benefits Toronto Rail Heritage Museum).
