How to keep calm in an emergency

How can I stay calm in an emergency and help my child calm down?

An injured child or a household emergency can be very frightening for both child and parent. Children are very attuned to the behavior and feelings of their parents, so a screaming, out-of-control adult will only scare them. If you are in a scary situation and feel yourself panicking, count to 10, take a deep breath, and tell yourself that you need to be a good role model for your child.

If all goes well, you'll never have to face an emergency. In the meantime, you can get prepared, just in case. Mentally going over plans for different scenarios, such as house fires and injuries, will help you remain calm if they ever occur.

For example, designate a meeting place outside the house in case of a fire, and teach everyone who is old enough in your home how to call 911. You can even write down an action plan if putting things in writing helps you remember and feel prepared..
